Types of Penile Implants
Penile implants are used to treat severe erectile dysfunction that does not respond to other treatments.
There are two main types of penile implants:
Inflatable Penile Implants
- Three-piece inflatable implants:These consist of two cylinders placed inside the penis, a fluid-filled reservoir placed in the abdomen, and a pump placed in the scrotum.
The cylinders are inflated by squeezing the pump, allowing the penis to become erect. After sexual activity, the fluid is returned to the reservoir, causing the penis to become flaccid again.
- Two-piece inflatable implants: These are similar to the three-piece implants but have a combined reservoir and pump unit placed in the scrotum.
They are easier to install but may not provide the same rigidity as the three-piece type.
Malleable or Semi-rigid Penile Implants
These implants consist of two flexible rods that are surgically placed inside the penis.
The penis remains in a semi-rigid state at all times and can be manually adjusted upwards for sexual activity or downwards for concealment.
This type of implant is simpler to install and less mechanically complex but may be less comfortable and aesthetically pleasing compared to inflatable implants.
Overall, each type of implant has its advantages and disadvantages, and the choice depends on the patient's preferences, health condition, and the recommendations of the treating physician.
